Abstract

This article analyses the impact of personality traits on the success of SME’s in Uganda. More specifically, it investigates whether education and social capital mediate in the relationship between the personality traits proactivity and self-efficacy and success of SME’s. The same mechanisms that lead proactivity and self-efficacy to influence the success of SME’s can also lead to a higher educational attainment and social capital, which in turn can be crucial for the success of SME’s in developing countries. By means of a mediation analysis, using a large-scale survey of entrepreneurs in Uganda, this paper finds evidence for these claims. Education and social capital are both found to be mediating factors in the relationship between the personality traits proactivity and self-efficacy and success of SME’s in Uganda. Additionally, results were compared between entrepreneurs in an urban (Kampala) and a rural region (Nakasake) and between male and female entrepreneurs. Apart from one noticeable exception, this paper finds that proactivity and self-efficacy are indirectly of value through education and social capital, in both regions and for both sexes.
