Abstract
This qualitative research investigates the social and economic impacts of Covid-19 on the kampongs (villages) in the Demak region, focusing on contrasting responses in Hong Kong and Indonesia. The study uses in-depth interviews and desk research, with an economic impact assessment tool to measure the effects of pandemic-related policies.
Hong Kong's proactive measures, including border closures and fast implementation of social distancing, stand in contrast to Indonesia's initially delayed response. Indonesia's late restrictions, influenced by government denial, posed challenges in testing, care provision, and spatial justice issues, revealing imbalance in healthcare access.
Economic consequences were evident among respondents, with income loss and job layoffs due to disrupted product distribution and sales. Naning, a fish processor, faced challenges as fishermen couldn't operate. Safii, a warung owner, experienced decreased income during lockdowns.
Socially, the pandemic disrupted in-person community activities, witch meant a shift to virtual interactions. While existing literature saw decreased social cohesion during crises, respondents in this study reported positive impacts.
Reflecting on three years of the pandemic, the study acknowledges global financial and social hardships. Despite imperfect measures, the kampong residents in Demak show resilience, adapting and encouraged community cohesion amid adversity.
