dc.description.abstractThis thesis examines how The New York Times and Dateline NBC perpetuated ideas of American exceptionalism through their framing of Operation Restore Hope and UNOSOM II. The findings reveal that both The New York Times and Dateline NBC consistently framed the interventions in ways that perpetuated American exceptionalism. Specific themes included portraying the United States as morally superior, the leader of the free world, and downplaying international contributions and complexities. These frames were evident across various forms of reporting, spanning both interventions and multiple years. The results suggest that both print and broadcast journalism play crucial roles in perpetuating American exceptionalism. The New York Times and Dateline NBC, as leading representatives of their respective media, set broader trends and standards that influence public discourse. This study underscores the importance of critically consuming news, as media framing can significantly shape and perpetuate ideological perceptions.
