Abstract

Because of a growing loss of interaction from people with nature, nature documentary can be relevant to inform people about topics relating to nature. It is important to investigate the way how people understand nature through nature documentary and how the documentaries influence environmental awareness. This thesis explores the possible contribution of nature documentary to people’s awareness of nature, paying particular attention to how the framing of nature creates specific images and feelings among consumers and the media platform. This is undertaken in the form of a single case-study on organizational level, inside the media organization BNNVARA, focusing on the platform Vroege Vogels (VV). By using a combination of quantitative surveys and qualitative semi-structured in-depth interviews, an understanding of the beliefs, notions and social world of nature of the research group is created with a constructivist perspective. The effects of nature documentary by Vroege Vogels are evaluated on respondents’ beliefs, expectations, emotional responses and motivations to address the awareness of these people. By doing a frame analysis, overarching frames are created, compared and matched to make Vroege Vogels understand and match the frames of their consumers better, creating a larger awareness of nature
