Abstract

Urban heat stress is currently considered the most significant climate risk. Policymakers can have a profound influence on urban heat stress by developing and implementing adaptation policies. However, municipalities cannot develop effective projects without sufficient knowledge on how to establish heat-resilient cities. This research aimed to uncover the climate services required by Dutch policymakers to guide decision-making concerning urban heat stress adaptation. The study adopted the climate information design template alongside the holistic triangular knowledge cycle for sustainability to establish a structured and theoretical foundation. Through a case study including semi-structured interviews with policymakers’ from various Dutch municipalities engaged in urban heat stress adaptation, the research has identified their specific requirements. By providing insight into these requirements, the research aims to strengthen the scientific foundation for ongoing heat stress research and facilitate the development of well-informed policies to beat urban heat stress.
