Abstract
In the thirteenth and fourteenth century the area that was ruled by the Mongol Empire enjoyed an amount of intercultural contact which had never been so direct and extreme before. As a consequence of this, several musical traditions came into (direct) contact for the first time during this period en were exchanged between the different cultures in the empire. This thesis aims to research this phenomenon further by studying the context of music, the process of exchange and the views on music within the Mongol Empire. The sources used for this are mostly travelogues and historical works from the thirteenth and early fourteenth century. The research resulted in the conclusion that the musical exchange naturally happened because of the size and diversity of the Mongol Empire but was sped up and intensified by the interest in foreign music of the Mongol rulers as a catalyst.
