Abstract

My thesis explores the consequences of crisis in British Metamodernist fiction. Metamodernism registers the end of postmodernism and the return to pre-postmodernist or modernist literary conventions. As it has only recently been introduced, it is not yet well-defined. Timotheus Vermeulen and Robin van den Akker argue for an oscillation between postmodernist and pre-postmodernist thematic sentiments, while David James and Urmila Seshagiri define Metamodernism as a return to modernist literary innovation and experimentation. I reconcile these definitions by arguing that crisis motivates an exchange in fiction between modernist and postmodernist sentiments through a close reading of three recently published novels.
