Abstract

In a time characterized by rapid technological advancements and an increasingly interconnected world, the visualisations of media outlets hold societal and academic significance as they provide a window into the emerging technology of the Metaverse, generally defined as an interconnected, immersive world that connects the physical to the virtual (Seidel et al. 1; Narin 17; Dolata and Schwabe 4). This research conducts a visual content analysis of images by twelve international news websites and online magazines. The main research question is: When comparing images from after the launch of Meta and the present, one and a half years later, what visual narrative about the relationship between humans and technology do international news websites and online magazines portray in the construction of the Metaverse? Comparing images from two different time periods, the goal is to identify the visual narrative and to find out how it is changing. In this thesis, the term visual narrative refers to the coherent utilization of media images to portray and communicate changes.
