Abstract

As the pitfalls during new product development process (NPD) of radical ecologically sustainable innovations were unclear, it was difficult for management to manage these processes. This research was aimed at constructing the determinants that lead to no-go decisions during the NPD process of ecologically sustainable innovations. Therefore, the question “What factors determine a no-go decision during the NPD process of ecologically sustainable innovations?” was raised. To gather information, a multiple-case study that included four food packaging firms has been executed. For data collection interviews with different types of employees involved in no-go decision-making and documents were used. After applying the explanation building analysis technique to the data, nine determinants that lead to no-go decisions for ecologically sustainable NPD projects were identified. It turned out that determinants leading to no-go decisions for regular radical NPD were also important for ecologically sustainable NPD. These are type of stage, technical feasibility, strategic fit, customer acceptance, financial performance, market opportunity and market familiarity. In addition, two new determinants were found: institutional regulations and economic developments. Now these determinants are identified, NPD processes can be updated in order to make the management of NPD easier.
