Abstract

This paper examines the concept of wellbeing within an organizational context, focusing on the perceptions of HR management and general management. The aim of this research was to establish perceptions on the concept of wellbeing and how these perceptions affect the phenomenon of wellbeing washing. Drawing from critical HRM literature, interviews and company documents, the paper reveals significant differences on the perceptions on the definition of wellbeing and how it is implemented. Despite the company’s efforts to project a commitment to employee wellbeing, a gap is found between this commitment and the actual implementation of these initiatives. Indicators such as superficial initiatives, neglecting employee input and lack of accountability structures, add to the perception of wellbeing washing. Revealing that symbolic actions are prioritized over fundamental changes. In addition, responsibility for employee wellbeing between HR and general management further complicates the effective implementation. This research shows how perceptions on wellbeing can differ on managerial level and how this can lead to unintended exploitation of the term.
