Abstract
The short- and long-term effects of foreign aid on refugee flows from 1976 to 2021 are examined in this paper. The study demonstrates, using time dummies and thorough regression models, that official development aid (ODA) has a positive link with refugee flows in the short term but no discernible long-term consequences. The paper emphasises that the main cause of refugee flows is conflict and emphasises the significance of governance and indices of human development in reducing these flows. The results support the push-pull theory of migration and stress the importance of coordinated aid plans that take into account both short-term humanitarian needs and long-term development objectives. Between 2013 and 2021, the best fit of the model was seen, which may indicate that the aid was more effective or that the international community responded more during this time. Strong monitoring and evaluation systems are recommended by the study to guarantee efficient utilisation of aid.
