| dc.description.abstract | This thesis cross-examines literature studies and adaptation studies in order to analyse how different media formats affect the process of adaptation. To achieve this, the thesis will combine literary review and a close reading of Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House. To examine any differences between film and television adaptations, the American film The Haunting, directed by Jan de Bont, and the Netflix adaptation The Haunting of Hill House, are compared and related to their source material as well as previous research on adaptation methods. All the while, the thesis is mindful of haunted houses as a conceptual trope formed in American Gothic horror. The thesis approaches the topic from a DAS study perspective and determines the impact the inherent format differences between TV and film have on the adaptation production. Then the film and TV series’ contemporary culture is examined, and this will relate to how it affected any changes in the original Gothic transhumanist spirit of the novel. Lastly, it is determined how influential the narrative structural differences between film and television are in the adaptation process. | en_US |
