Abstract
The aim of this thesis is to explore the way in which financial aid for the arts and culture sector was justified in the political debate in The Netherlands and Ireland during the first months of the COVID-19-pandemic. The study focuses on two debates: the Dutch ‘Cultuur en Corona’ debate that took place on 28th April 2020 in The Hague and the ‘Dáil Eíreann’ debate that took place on 14th May 2020 in Dublin. The texts from these debates form the data for the qualitative analysis. The ‘six worlds of justification’-theory by sociologists Luc Boltanski and Laurent Thévenot forms the main theoretical framework for the analysis of these debates.
