Abstract
This research addresses the effects of organizational size and external variety on the implementation of lean practices. Through conducting a qualitative research approach within multiple small and large organizations, this relationship is clarified. The findings suggest mixed effects on the implementation of lean practices and the culture of continuous improvement, and a direct negative effect of external variety on lean practices implementation. This is mainly the case for organizations experiencing high degrees of demand variability, demand uncertainty and product variety. Based on the different relationships, a conceptual model useful for further research is developed. Keywords: Lean implementation; continuous improvement; organizational size; external variety
