Abstract
The urban world is changing and urban sprawl is one of its main initiators. Urban sprawl can be defined as an urban process which mostly occurs as an undesirable development pattern. It basically is the excessive growth of a city into its hinterland where, in most cases, rural land is converted into urban built-up areas. Urban sprawl has become a major issue the past decades because of the growth in world population and the increasing urbanization. This urban sprawl and its consequences are most visible in cities located in developing countries. The city of Yogyakarta, located on the island of Java in Indonesia is no exception for this phenomenon. This research focusses on two consequences of urban sprawl: the change in land-use and in community character. A neighborhood in Yogyakarta, affected by urban sprawl, is chosen as a case study and with the use of literature, observations and interviews the two named consequences are studied. The aim is to gain new insides in the development of urban sprawl in a developing city, while most existing literature focusses on cities in developed countries, and the experiences that people have with it. Noticeable is that most literature sees urban sprawl as a negative process, whereas the inhabitants of the case area in Yogyakarta also see positive changes. Despite the disappearance of rural land and the change of the community itself because of the migration of new people the inhabitants note positive remarks like the improvement of the economy. They showed that urban sprawl doesn’t always have to be a negative process and that it can be used for the improvement of a neighborhood.
