Abstract

Due to the Corona pandemic and continual globalization, online communication is on a global rise. As a result, online meetings have become part of daily practice. Scientific research is needed to help companies make informed decisions about a code of practice for online meetings. However, only limited research analyzes how the different aspects of online communication (e.g., visibility and language background) can influence the communication process. Consequently, the following research looked into the effect of visibility and language background on perceived communicative success, perceived task success, task outcome, likeability rating, and pro-social behavior rating in online communication. In a between-subject memorized spot the difference task via the online communication platform Zoom, 52 Dutch and German participants in 26 dyads were tested across four conditions (shared language background with visibility, shared language background without visibility, mixed language background with visibility, mixed language background without visibility). The results indicated that visibility does affect the perceived communicative success. Participants who were able to see each other assessed one another higher on the perceived communicative success scale. However, language background did not influence the perceived communicative success or the likeability and pro-social behavior ratings.
