Abstract

The need for mobility is steadily increasing in today’s society, yet there is a need to change the way people travel in the city to save space and positively impact the climate and citizens’ health. The overuse of car, in fact, has led to increased pollution, congestion, environmental damage, and serious health problems. Shifting travel away from the car and towards more sustainable modes such as cycling is a particular challenge not only connected to the choice of modes of transport, it is also a political challenge. Despite the various advantages, modal shift from car to bike is challenging for the society, as it requires a behavioral shift. By the means of Social Practice Theory, this research investigates the elements that constitute the practices of driving and of cycling. The research takes into account the influence that policy instruments have on behavioral patterns, stimulating citizens to cycle more. Since multimodal mobility hubs provide convenient infrastructure for passengers, potentially leading to a more sustainable mobility, hub amenities that ease the modal shift from car driving to cycling will be identified. As a case study, the local policies of Nijmegen, and the use of the hub Nijmegen Noord are analyzed.
