Abstract

This research explores Yevgeny Zamyatin's We (1924) and Aldous Huxley's Brave New World (1932), examining and comparing their contents in an ecocritical light, with an emphasis on the ecocritical notion of apocalypse. This thesis attempts to find how these novels can be read from an ecocritical perspective, and analyses where the differences with respect to apocalyptical ideas lie in these two novels. The topic will be studied by engaging with previous literature on ecocriticism and by analysing the two novels. Examining a relatively specialist subject such as dystopian fiction against the background of ecocriticism is something that has not been done extensively in the past, and thus could pave the way for future ecocritical studies of major works of fiction.
