Abstract

This study examines the relation between firm innovation and firm growth among SMEs in Europe. Furthermore, the role of other firm characteristics, such as digitalization and presence of collaboration partners is analyzed. Data from the Flash Eurobarometer 486 is employed to test these concepts. An ordinal logistic regression model was used to test the impact of firm innovation on firm growth and the moderating role of firm digitalization and its presence of collaboration partners. The results show that firm innovation and firm digitalization are significant predictors of firm growth, but the effect of firm innovation on firm growth is not moderated by either firm digitalization or a firm’s presence of collaboration partners. The results further reveal that the age, size, and home country of the SME are significant predictors of firm growth. This research brings forth an interesting debate on the complex interplay between innovation, digitalization, collaboration partners, and growth. Further research is required to develop this field, which is becoming increasingly relevant due to the fast-paced digital development current taking place in Europe.
