Abstract

Increasing attention is given to the Circular Economy, which is a concept that could create economic welfare as well as sustainability. Yet, citizen involvement is often neglected in circular economy literature. Governments and organizations are much more involved in the circular economy, even though citizens are a substantial group of actors in such a societal change, especially in the waste dimension. Therefore, the main question of this research is: How do citizens contribute to the circular economy, with a focus on waste? This was studied by looking into waste practices of citizens in Nijmegen. With use of practice theory, the research methods were created and the results were analyzed. Next to practice theory, the R9 model was used to define how circular citizens’ practices are. The results involve an analysis of waste separation practices of citizens in Nijmegen, and involve insights in how circular waste practices of citizens are. This research ends with the following conclusions and recommendations: To further develop waste separation practices, convenience, common sense, knowledge, space and material must be included. Furthermore, practices such as reuse and refusal of products should be stimulated in order to increase circular practices among citizens.
