Abstract
The aim of this research was to investigate the experiences of female, Dutch equestrian tourists on multi-day guided horse treks. Interviews were conducted with five women who had participated in a horse riding holiday one to three months prior to the interviews. The interview transcriptions were coded using a thematic analysis method to identify themes in the data. Nine common themes were identified regarding the experiences of equestrian tourists: escapism, the natural environment, challenge and accomplishment, socializing and community, social identity, cultural experiences and authenticity, risk and rush, gender and the human-horse relationship.
