Abstract

Employees working in multinational corporations speak multiple foreign languages and have to work together with colleagues with different cultural backgrounds and personality traits. In order to maintain employee retention, it is crucial that employees are satisfied with their jobs, their working environments and the colleagues they work with. The aim of the current study was to establish whether a relationship exists between multicultural effectiveness and multilingualism and furthermore, to investigate whether these two variables could separately predict job satisfaction. Multilingualism consists of three parts, namely number of foreign languages, a composite foreign language fluency score and number of foreign languages spoken at work. In the present research, employees working at a multinational corporation filled out an online questionnaire (N = 156). The corporation operates in the chemical industry and has its headquarters in Germany.
