Abstract

This study explores the content characteristics of prosocial narratives specifically for marginalized groups. The aim with this study is to evoke empathy and encourage the audience to perform more prosocial actions towards marginalized groups. The dataset consists of 32 text based narratives. Transportation and character recognition help the audience immerse in the narrative. Transportation and character recognition is fostered by the most common elements: single adult protagonists, urban settings, power imbalances and events with situational or relational challenges with predominantly negative valence. These elements create a stronger connection between the marginalized character in the narrative and the audience. Resulting in more empathy and less stigma for marginalized groups in real life. This study contributes to the understanding of narrative content and how it might influence prosocial attitudes. Future research should expand the research to multimedia narratives and the other parts of narratives such as form and context dimensions. Hopefully, creating more persuasive pro social narratives in the future.
