Abstract

The German-American relationship has undergone many changed throughout the past 100 years. Once enemies in World War I and World War II, the relations gradually normalized and a forward-looking partnership was established. As the US largely helped German reunification, President George Bush introduced the concept of “Partners in Leadership”, hoping the US and Germany would form a strong transatlantic alliance that stood together fast. However, national differences, historic perceptions, and political changes soon began to test the friendship. This paper explores the standpoints of both the US and Germany on their relationship in the 21st century, the path there and the most recent disturbance of the transatlantic partners: The Global Surveillance Disclosures.
