Abstract

This thesis aims to explore the leading factors and purposes behind the attraction of Russia and the United States to Syria. It concentrates, furthermore, on the Russian role in demoting the U.S. hegemony in the region to support Russian allies and achieve its expansionist and economic objectives, whereby reacquiring its weight at the global level. The primary question of the research is going to be: how has the Arab spring drawn Russian and American interests into Syria? To comprehend the reasons behind Russian and American attitudes toward the Syrian war, it is essential to understand the nature of the conflict in Syria. The research method I will use is text analysis so that finding out the external and internal determinants of American as well as Russian militarily presence in Syria. The findings reveal that the Syrian War has allowed Russia to restore its international reputation as a superpower. The Trump administration presents more continuity in the Middle East and a clear diplomatic stand. Removal of Bashar al-Assad from power is not a priority for the United States. Moreover, the Syrian war is not driven by sectarianism but rather constructed and profits external agendas.
