The present thesis was presented as the final work for the obtention of the Master in Linguistics by Radboud University during the 2017-2018 academic year. The present qualitative study investigated in what ways the use of a supposed ‘Latin American’ Spanish norm in the audiovisual translation (AVT) field in Latin America affects the comprehension of colloquial language in comedy movies for native Spanish-speaking Latin American viewers. An experiment was carried out where 32 participants from nine different Latin American countries evaluated and commented on the translation of idiomatic expressions into Spanish in two modalities of AVT: subtitling and dubbing, of non-Spanish-speaking movies from the comedy genre. Furthermore, their comprehension of idiomatic expressions in Spanish-speaking movies from two different Latin American countries (Argentina and Mexico) was evaluateden_US
