Abstract

This thesis explores the instrumental and political music of post-rock group Godspeed You! Black Emperor, aiming to discover how this music is used in their political context. The music consists of long instrumental songs, with only the political context mentioned in paratextual elements like the song titles or in press releases. For the listener, this makes it difficult to understand exactly what their political goals are and how they are expressed through the music. In this research two songs were analysed that dealt with political topics through instrumental music, one with an ambiguous political goal and one with a more clear goal. Through affect theory, the music is understood as having the potential capacity to open up possibilities of social transformation and as having the potential to express how political goals are lived and felt.
