Abstract

In this article, I argue why a posthuman framework must be used when conceptualizing the notion of disability. I provide a new and original take on conceptualizing disability that aims to incorporate the significance of power dynamics in a posthuman framework. To do so, I first provide an exposition of the ongoing debate between the hegemonic and/or current conceptualizations of disability, focusing on the social and medical model, to argue how and why these conceptualizations fail. Consequently, I argue how a posthuman understanding of disability — that is, one beyond a universal and hegemonic conception of the human as a rational, sentient, and primate being of the Homo sapiens species — ought to be engaged with when examining the notion of disability. Finally, I emphasize the role of power dynamics in a posthuman conceptualization of disability.
