Abstract

There has appeared a noticeable shift in how artists approach their artworks since the 2010s: metamodernism. The result of the complexity of modern day societies that are plagued by material events, such as climate change. This thesis investigates how metamodernism affects Dutch protest music by focusing on Sophie Straat’s song “Tweede Kamer” (2021). There is extensive literature on protest music and metamodernism, but not on both. This thesis aims to address that gap by examining how Sophie Straat raises awareness of the poor representation of women in the House of Representatives with her song “Tweede Kamer” through a metamodern structure of feeling creating political potential. This thesis employs the method of a discourse analysis of Straat’s lyrics, genre and music video of the song. It draws on the theoretical frameworks by Timotheus Vermeulen and Robin van de Akker, Kim Wilkins, and Ron Eyerman and Andrew Jamison which provide a foundation in understanding “Tweede Kamer” as an expression of a metamodern protest song. The key of this research is to highlight how protest music has to adapt to an ever-changing society as exemplified by Sophie Straat’s “Tweede Kamer” which is an expression of a metamodern protest song.
