Abstract

This thesis examines the impact of incubator participation on start-up performance, considering the influence of incubator network size and human capital resources. The study draws upon the perspectives of the Resource-Based View, the Knowledge-Based View, and the Social Network Theory to establish hypotheses emphasizing the positive effects of incubator involvement. Previous research has yielded conflicting results, including findings of no significance or adverse effects. To address this, the study utilizes a multiple regression analysis on a substantial sample of 4188 start-ups, with equal representation from participating and non-participating start-ups sourced from Crunchbase. Start-up performance is evaluated through funding, revenue, and Crunchbase ranking. Contrary to the prevailing belief in a positive relationship between incubator participation and start-up performance, the findings challenge this assumption. The results reveal a complex relationship, indicating potential challenges and limitations associated with incubator involvement. Consequently, the study highlights the need for further exploration into the specific characteristics and dynamics of the incubator environment. These insights deepen our understanding of how incubator resources influence start-up performance, providing valuable implications for start-ups, incubators, investors, and policymakers. A nuanced approach is necessary to maximize the benefits of incubator participation while mitigating potential drawbacks.
