Abstract

In this qualitative research a group of highly skilled migrant women engage in a sketchbooking project. Four participants had seven days to respond to the theme of place in a sketchbook. The research design and ethos of the project were influenced by Joan Tronto’s ethics of care and focus on encouraging autonomy of the participants; participants were free to interpret the theme however they wished and respond in the sketchbook and other activities in their own styles. The project, including the sketchbooking, the process and reflection activities (consisting of two maps) were designed to foster conditions in which participants might cultivate place attachment. This sketchbooking project (TSBP) is underpinned by two main theories: Boud's theory of reflection and Scannell and Gifford’s tripartite framework of place attachment. A new theoretical framework which incorporates these two frameworks incorporates and develops both theories to explain and demonstrate the underpinnings of reflection and place attachment theory in the project; as well as providing a model for further research in using creative methods in place attachment. This project was conducted by recruiting volunteers from the Radboud University community.
