Abstract

With gender inequality still a persistent problem within academia, Dutch universities have implemented gender equality policies to try and solve this issue. However, without an intersectional approach, women with intersecting social categories can become invisible in the policy due to variability in the experiences. To increase the insight in intersectional invisibility in gender equality policies, the Gender Equality Plan and interviews with ten women academics of different age groups working at a Dutch university were analyzed on the intersection of gender and age. Analysis was done through qualitative content analysis and the Gioia methodology. The analysis shows that the Gender Equality Plan does not take age into account in the interventions and activities to improve the gender equality at the university. However, young women do experience age-related gender equality issues, such as a lack of recognition as serious scientist and harassment by senior staff. This indicates that the age group of younger women do experience intersectional invisibility in the gender equality policy. Middle-aged and older women were more positive about the gender equality at the university, as their experience and reputation connected to their career stage make them less vulnerable to gender equality issues.
