Abstract
In an era dominated by social media, distinguishing trustworthy news from unreliable sources has become increasingly challenging. The thesis investigates the impact of news tone (subjective vs. objective) and news literacy (low vs. high) on the perceived trustworthiness of news sources on Instagram. An experiment with 60 participants revealed that news sources using subjective language are perceived as less trustworthy than those using objective language. News literacy did not significantly influence trustworthiness ratings nor interact with news tone. The findings underscore the importance of objectivity in news reporting for maintaining credibility and trust on social media. Despite non-significant findings regarding news literacy, its importance in influencing trust perceptions is well-documented. Promoting media literacy education remains crucial to help consumers critically evaluate news content. Future research should explore broader population samples and consider additional factors, such as visual elements, to understand news literacy dynamics comprehensively.
