Abstract

This study investigated the impact of story ending valence and empathy levels on narrative engagement and prosocial behavior within the domain of interactive narratives (IDNs). This is relevant because the use of interactive narrative in persuasive and awareness-raising contexts is rising. However, there is still a lack of research on the effect that narrative outcomes and user characteristics can have on the effectiveness of IDNs for this purpose. Therefore, the present study investigated whether trait empathy moderates the impact of positive versus negative story endings on willingness to donate time and money.
