Abstract

This study examines the effect of finding a suitable partner on the identity building process of the female protagonist in recent Hallmark Channel productions. It answers the following question: how is the heroine’s process of identity building connected to finding a suitable partner and a postfeminist ideology in post-2020 Hallmark Channel productions showing White, hetero-sexual couples? This topic is addressed by analysing several recent Hallmark films, which were approached from a postfeminist angle and analysed based on identity building, professional downgrading, (family) trauma, gender expectations, and retreatism. It connects trauma to adult attachment styles in romantic relationships and discusses the importance of finding a partner in overcoming trauma. Additionally, it will discuss the correlation between postfeminist media and post-pandemic trends that can be found in society (e.g. 'Slow Living' or the 'tradwive' trend on social media). The identity building of the heroine is started, fuelled and completed by (finding) her male counterpart because he makes her realise her discontent with her urban lifestyle, trade in her career for her hometown, overcome trauma, and realign herself with traditional gender expectations.
