Abstract

In recent years, thousands of female Syrian refugees fled to the Netherlands. Most of them received asylum. Their views on the definition of integration are not known. This thesis wants to find out what the definition of these women on the term integration is, what they need to achieve it and what the role of governmental policies is in this framework. The term integration is a term that exists because of the current power relations. Because of that, in line with the thought of the reflexive turn, the research method regarding interviews is based on the grounded theory, whereas policies will be analyzed using the content analysis method. The women see integrating as having a future perspective. To achieve this, they want to be independent, experience tranquility and have a sense of belonging. In this context, knowing the language and order and structure are very important, because these two variables facilitate the three components that are deemed necessary to have a future perspective and thus to integrate- according to the women’s definition. The policies, in generic terms, align with these perspectives. The question remains, however, to what extent the policies’ execution agrees with the needs and perspectives the women provide.
