Abstract

Entrepreneurs face multiple challenges during the development of their ideas/companies. To overcome these challenges, feedback could be useful to further develop their ideas. Therefore, entrepreneurs can pitch their ideas and ask for feedback from a group of experts to acquire new insights. However, entrepreneurs are often highly committed to their ideas and resistant to change. This research examines how ‘commitment to a pitched idea’ influences the ‘degree of pivoting’. with the entrepreneurial identities (Darwinian and Missionary) as moderating variables. Quantitative research has been conducted to investigate this relationship; the data from a questionnaire within the company Open Brains has been used. The three hypotheses have been tested through two multiple regression analyses. This study confirmed that ‘commitment to a pitched idea’ has a negative direct effect on the ‘degree of pivoting’. It was expected that the Darwinian and Missionary identity moderated this relationship. However, the results of this research show, contrary to expectations; the relationship between ‘commitment to a pitched idea’ and the ‘degree of pivoting’ is not moderated by one of these entrepreneurial identities. However, this study does indicate that due to a small sample size and contextual factors, there are limitations that may ensure that an existing moderating relationship could not be found in this study but could be found in subsequent larger studies.
