Abstract

The Speculum Virginum has been a very important text for nuns during the Middle Ages. This Latin text was widely spread and was also translated into Middle-Dutch as the Spieghel der Meechden. Many copies of both texts still remain today. In past research only the relation between the Latin and Middle-Dutch prologue has been studied. In this study a comparison is made between the prologue, book 4 and book 5 of the Speculum Virginum and the Spieghel der Meechden. The analysis shows that many alterations have been made. Particularly, the text has been shortened in many ways. This article attributes those changes to the audience of the fifteenth century, in which nuns were supposed to memorise and discuss samples of religious texts. Therefore a concise version was necessary.
