Abstract

The construction industry today uses traditional linear economy practices, where the virgin material is extracted, produced, used for a project, and disposed of in the form of waste. This way of thinking has caused detriment to nature and communities around the world because a lot of the waste produced will end up in landfills. Circular economy is an alternative solution to usual linear practices where the raw material extraction use can be limited. The topic was analyzed through the theoretical framework of Multi-Level Perspective by Geels to find out the current state of the construction industry in Rotterdam and how circular initiatives and processes influence the built environment. The challenges and the opportunities of these initiatives and processes are grouped through five critical factors. Literature review found that there are multiple circular construction opportunities and methods, for instance material passports, deconstruction, recycling of materials and material hubs that architecture companies currently use in the Netherlands. The research showed that circularity is slowly accessing all three MLP levels which are promoted by several opportunities but there are still some challenges that stop the transition towards circularity.
