Abstract

In this thesis, the characters Joan Watson, Irene Adler, and Jamie Moriarty of the CBS show Elementary are analysed on their gender representation within the series. For Joan Watson and Jamie Moriarty, this is in regards to their origins as male characters. This thesis hopes to provide an answer for what the influence of swapping a character's gender has on the perceived narrative, both for the character themself as well as the society around it. This will be done through the use of theories on perceiving gender and the performativity of gender in society, specifically by Judith Butler. In analysing these characters, this thesis will argue that the aforementioned character’s gender is influenced both by the characters origins, as well as their experiences as women within the universe of Elementary.
