dc.description.abstractThe management of solid, domestic waste is one of the most essential services provided by the Dutch municipal authorities. Although there is consensus that the future lies in closed material cycles and a circular economy, it is unclear to municipalities what choices they have to make with regard to waste management in order to achieve sustainable goals. Municipalities in the Netherlands have a certain freedom to design their waste policy according to their own views. This degree of freedom means that the prevailing ideas that are present among policy makers are of great importance for the policy pursued by the municipality. This research provides insight into the municipal arguments, how they think about waste, how we can learn of their arguments and making recommendations for improving waste management. At thirteen municipalities, three dominant discourses where found. These discourses were also compared on the amount of residual waste per inhabitant and the waste separation rate. In order to achieve a more sustainable waste management, a series of steps will have to be taken.en_US
