Abstract
People living in rural areas often need to travel long distances to nearby towns or villages for work, shopping, healthcare, or other needs. Given that walking or cycling such distances is often impractical and public transport may be unavailable, people in rural areas frequently rely on cars, limiting their opportunities for active transport. This research focuses on how limited perceived accessibility of public transport affects the level of non-leisure active transport, using Brinkheurne, a rural village without a public transport stop within its boundaries, as a case study. The study employed mixed methods, including surveys and interviews, to gather data on current transport patterns, perceptions of public transport accessibility, and factors influencing the choice of transportation modes for traveling between home and daily destinations. It revealed that limited accessibility to public transport can affect the level of non-leisure active transport, but higher accessibility to public transport would not significantly improve its attractiveness and use. The low usage is also attributed to other factors such as high costs and fixed schedules, not just limited perceived accessibility.
