Abstract

As the world is facing climate change, the need for integrating sustainability into a firm’s operations increases. However, a lack of sustainable technologies adopted by firms remains. Especially for firms in the manufacturing industry, there is much to gain in terms of sustainability. This study investigates the effect of both collaboration on R&D with three different partner types (i.e., suppliers, research institutes and other firms), and outsourcing of R&D, on the adoption of energy- and materials saving technologies. Especially due to the newness and unknowns in the sustainability domain, partnering and sharing resources with other firms could be a possible solution that might support adoption. Data from the European Manufacturing Survey for 203 Dutch manufacturing firms is used to analyse the effects of both collaboration and outsourcing on adoption of energy- and materials saving technologies. A multiple regression analysis is performed to investigate these effects. From this analysis, no significant effects where found between collaboration on R&D with either suppliers, research institutes, or other firms and outsourcing of R&D on the adoption of energy- and materials saving technologies. This is in contrast with previous research, that did find both factors having a positive effect on the adoption of (product) innovations. Therefore, it seems that for process innovations as energy- and materials saving technologies, partnering, and sharing resources might not yield more adoption. Keywords: climate change
