Abstract
Inter-organizational networks, comprising three or more autonomous organizations working towards a common goal, are becoming increasingly important in addressing complex societal problems. Given this increasing importance and prevalence of inter-organizational networks, there is a growing emphasis on studying determinants of network effectiveness. This master’s thesis focuses on the structure of networks, defined in structure theory as the way tasks are defined and integrated into a network of tasks, as a determinant of network effectiveness. Using a theory-oriented approach, a structural lens is applied to inter-organizational networks to compare structure theory and network theory, examining how structure theory can inform network theory on network effectiveness. Based on a systematic comparison of the two theoretical frameworks, it is concluded that structure theory informs network theory in three ways. First, structure theory informs network theory on how a network structure characterized by low values on the design parameters can foster trust relationships and commitment to network goals, while preventing coordination issues, lack of overview and overembeddedness. Additionally, it provides insights on how cliques can be formed in networks to enhance network effectiveness. Lastly, structure theory contributes to network theory by suggesting how work processes can be coordinated, limiting the standardization of processes, thereby enhancing the network effectiveness.
