Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine the aspects of social media that irritate elderly and the effects on their well-being. Since the older generation is growing, it is valuable to understand them, in order to target them. The study fills existing gaps in literature by researching the irritations of Dutch elderly. The study consists of literature, qualitative, and quantitative research (187 respondents). Data was analyzed with factor and regression analysis. The results showed that social media self-efficacy is positively related to a change in overall well-being, health and loneliness scores. The change in overall well-being is related to social support and being part of the community. For loneliness, two other variables were positive predictors, namely wanting to be part of community and creating new contacts. The degree of use is predicted by three variables: curiosity, easy communication, and need for news. Furthermore, the degree of social media use is negatively related to the change in depression score. No mediation effect of social media use was found. The biggest irritation regarding social media use is fake news. Irritations have no effect on the change in well-being. Overall, results did not match expectations.
