Abstract
This thesis investigates the evolution of the American action hero from 1980-2010. It explains the circumstances that caused different action heroes in different eras and explains different types of masculinity found in these eras. Nine films were analyzed for this thesis, three for each decade discussed. The 1980s saw a rise in highly muscular men, working on their own to defeat evil. The 1990s saw a surge in ensemble casts, heroes working together to save the world. The villains in the 1990s were more often than not alien. The years after 9/11 saw the rise of superheroes the penultimate action heroes.
