Abstract
This research aims to investigate the barriers that energy cooperatives encounter as an organization and explain how these barriers can be overcome. This is done by comparing different energy cooperatives in the Cleantech region in the Netherlands. Firstly, the comparison is made through seven dimensions, namely; legal, organizational, personal, cultural and economic dimensions, the relation with the local government and the relation with market actors. The results are shown in a visual representation of a wheel diagram. The differences can be analyzed after each case is positioned in the diagram. Secondly, in-depth interviews are done to explain the differences between the energy cooperatives, in light of the seven dimensions and to argue why these differences appear. The next step of the research is to write recommendations on how the barriers can be overcome to become an improved ‘energy cooperative 2.0’.
