Abstract
A mindset in accordance with Organizational citizenship behavior (OCB), which means looking beyond the primary responsibilities by employees, is related to aspects of a learning organization (Argyris, 1997). The current study looks into the relationship between distinctive leadership styles, self-efficacy and OCB. Expected is that transformational leadership, transactional leadership and self-efficacy are positively related to OCB and laissez-faire leadership negatively (Masood et al., 2020;). In addition to this, expected is that a transformational and transactional leader will positively influence the relationship between self-efficacy and OCB and a laissez-faire leader negatively (Khan et al., 2020). The results show that transformational leadership, transactional leadership and self-efficacy are positively related to OCB. Laissez-faire leadership is negatively related to OCB. Especially transformational leadership can explain the variance in OCB. The relationship between self-efficacy and OCB is positively moderated by a high-scoring transformational leader and negatively moderated by a low-scoring laissez-faire leader. Limitations in the current study are the limited distinction between the leadership styles, a rather homogenous sample and the use of self-assessment. Recommendations for the organization are: invest in creating awareness about leadership, self-efficacy and OCB by informing employees, update the leadership model, appoint ambassadors for effective leadership behavior and set clear objectives. In addition, the organization could increase coworker support, which could make OCB more of a group phenomenon (Hoffman et al., 2007). All in all, promoting OCB in employees could result in more employees looking beyond primary responsibilities, which is related to aspects of a learning organization.
