Abstract

This thesis researches the effect that a humor work environment has on the innovative behavior amongst kitchen employees in the fine dining industry. There have been different theories in the past on what characterizes a work environment. Since the work environment is key to triggering innovative behavior amongst employees, more clarity on the work environment is needed. This research is aimed to fill some of these literature gaps as it further defines the work environment and how humor as part of it might have an influence on innovative behavior amongst kitchen employees. It has been proposed that a humor work environment positively influences innovative behavior, as well as team trust and team learning both having a positive moderating effect on the relationship. An analysis has been carried out using a quantitative study with data from kitchen employees in fine dining restaurants globally. Results showed that kitchen employees working in a humor work environment indeed show increased innovative behavior. Team trust and team learning were not found to have a moderating effect, however, they did show a direct relation to innovative behavior.
