Abstract

Of the top 50 best ranked restaurants in Latin America, only 8 restaurants are led by women; and under all chefs with three Michelin stars worldwide, only four per cent is a woman (Asociación Mexicana de Restaurantes, 2021; UN Women, 2019). Building upon their underrepresentation in the industry, this research explores the daily practices of female restaurant owners in Mexico City. Aiming to contribute to promoting female leadership in the restaurant industry, this research centralizes the main question ‘What factors influence the practices of female restaurant owners in Mexico City?’ In this qualitative research, practice theory was combined with feminist theory. Empirical data has been collected through eight interviews with female restaurant owners and multiple observations at their businesses. The main findings reveal that women owners face gender prejudices and role incongruities, and safety concerns in the city lead them to adjust their business operations, such as opening hours. The conclusion highlights that team, safety concerns and motivation are the three factors that mostly influence the practices of female restaurant owners in Mexico City. Support groups and safety measures for female restaurant owners are suggested, aiming to reduce gender inequalities in the industry, and encourage and sustain female leadership.
